Glow Like Your Ancestors Are Watching
Rituals, Radiance & Remembering for the Solstice Portal + Cancer Season
With Cancer season just over the hill of this week, I've been thinking A LOT about ancestry and the mysterious ways our lineage lives within us. Ever since Jupiter entered Cancer on June 9th, I've been more obsessed than usual (I AM a cancer rising, so this IS where I live) with questions of lineage, inheritance, and the stories our blood carries. And honestly, can you blame me? Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, which means it’s thriving here - nurturing, expanding, and watering all things ancestral. Over the next year, we’ll be deepening our relationship to roots, lineage, and the sweet ache of NOSTALGIA.
When I think about Cancer energy, one of its major epithets IMHO is NOSTALGIA. Every year this season invites us into a sensory pool of nostalgia. I mean ask any Cancer placement about this emotion and they'll probably tell you they spend their life being nostalgic for something that hasn't even happened yet.
The beautiful thing about nostalgia? It's hyper-personal. Cancer season is a gate to nostalgia, and therewithin our personal mythology and guide to caring for ourselves. I keep coming back to this question: can we inherit nostalgia? Can we feel homesick for places we've never been because our ancestors hearts still live there? With this being such a headline for Cancer energy, I've found myself writing poems about nostalgia (how incredibly Cancer of me, I know). I felt pulled to share the first one that emerged from me, just days after Jupiter entered Cancer.
Do you think you can inherit nostalgia?
Sometimes I smell my mother's nostalgia of dusty sunsets, worn leather tack, and her newborn horse from her eighth summer.
Sometimes I hear my grandmother's nostalgia of the cries of her firstborn child who was handed out the window in the hospital parking lot to be adopted, to her sixteen-year-old surprise.
Sometimes I feel my great-grandmother's nostalgia of the fringe of her dress hitting her shins as she reveled in a few years of freedom in Denver, Colorado, where she was a telephone operator by day and a flapper by night until returning home to Utah to raise her family.
When I lick the blood from my paper cut after writing this, it all comes pouring in. Nostalgia in my blood.
Cancer Season officially begins this Friday on Summer Solstice here in the northern hemisphere - the longest day of the year. All cardinal seasons (Cancer, Capricorn, Aries and Libra) begin on the first day of a new season, which makes sense since cardinal energy is all about STARTING something. Friday marks both the celebration of light at its fullest expression and our descent into the realm of feelings, family, and the mysteries that live in our blood.

Cardinal water energy at its finest, Cancer Season (June 20 - July 22) initiates emotional experiences and deep connections. I always say Cancer teaches us how to FEEL and how to get comfortable with our feelings. This deeply connects to the fact that Cancer is ruled by the Moon, inviting us to acknowledge, witness and honor our personal cycles and shifts. And no, I'm not about to tell you "Cancer is all about CRYING since it's ruled by the Moon." (Eye roll, please.) Cancer's lunar connection creates a container of nourishment, intuition, and protection - it craves security, ease, and sense of family (whether blood or chosen).
But here's the thing… do you know what good care requires? BOUNDARIES. This is reflected quite literally by all the creatures that represent Cancer - they're soft-bodied beings with hard, protective exteriors. This season is all about that delicate dance between vulnerability and clear boundaries. We often get so caught up in what we don't want to allow inside our boundary - but what about the good stuff we actually want INSIDE that boundary? This is just as important as defining what we don't allow in. Some excellent Cancer Season homework is to make a drawing of your "boundary" (make it a fun shape!) and write down all the things you want INSIDE of it.
With Cancer Season kicking off on Summer Solstice - the peak of solar energy - this is the perfect time to explore how boundaries and perception work together through glamour magick. Here's the thing about glamour magick - it's not, contrary to popular belief, about making yourself glamorous (although you certainly can). It's actually all about playing with perception and how others perceive you (or don't, which can be a form of glamour magick protection). And this is where the sun comes in... how the sun's rays bounce off us is how we're quite literally perceived. So when we work with solar energy, we can shift our perception.
