Nothing Demure about Monday 8/19/24
A frenetic Aquarius Full Moon ruled by Saturn square Jupiter
She is not demure or mindful or cutesy. She is unexpected, chaotic, and frenetic. I’m talking about the Aquarius Super Blue Full Moon. I mean, even just describing her is a mouthful! Before we get into the astrology of her, let’s break down the “Super” and “Blue” parts.
A Super Moon occurs when a Full Moon (or New Moon) coincides with perigee - the closest point in the Moon's elliptical orbit to Earth. This lunar close-up makes the Moon appear larger and brighter in the sky - we're talking up to 14% bigger and 30% more luminous than when it's at its furthest point. So if you feel like this Moon is more in-your-face than usual, you're not imagining things. It's not just super in name, it's super in presence, influence, and overall vibe.
A Blue Moon doesn’t actually change color, this phrase has everything to do with timing. We've got two flavors of Blue Moon: seasonal and monthly. This one's the seasonal variety, which means we are having 4 full moons in our current astronomical season instead of 3. The third of these four full moons is designated as a blue moon, which is what this Aquarius full moon is. Now, there's also the monthly Blue Moon - the second Full Moon in a calendar month, which is not the variety we are encountering.
There is SO MUCH happening on this Full Moon Day, my friends. Grab your popcorn because I’m about to take you on quite a journey to break all of this down. First, let’s dive into the Aquarius archetype. Sure, Aquarius is the innovator, the out-of-the-box thinker, the revolutionary who’s all about making the world a better place. But there’s more to the story. Aquarius is also ruled by Saturn, our cosmic Daddy and the taskmaster of the zodiac. Saturn asks us to bring some discernment and structure to all those wild ideas.
So, while Aquarius might be the “idea guy” of the zodiac, bursting with visionary concepts, it can sometimes get a little too fixed on its ideas. Luckily, the Saturn rulership makes this archetype unafraid of getting in the trenches alongside the people to bring those ideas to life.
In general, our yearly Aquarius Full Moon sparks a collective urge to break free from limitations, think outside the box, and revolutionize the status quo. It’s a time when we’re called to balance our lofty ideals with practical steps, using Saturn’s wisdom to turn those big dreams into tangible realities.
THIS 2024 Aquarius Full Moon didn’t just fall out a coconut tree though, check the context it’s existing in:
Opposite Mercury Retrograde. This alone is enough to create tension between our emotions and our thoughts, but it’s just one piece of the puzzle.
And that opposition is actually part of a T-Square happening between the Moon, Mercury Retrograde and Uranus. So, what’s a T-Square? Picture this: in the sky, we have the Moon, Mercury retrograde, and Uranus forming a giant triangle. The Moon and Mercury retrograde are opposite each other, creating a tug-of-war between our feelings and our communication. Now, throw in a square from Uranus, the planet of shaking shit up. This setup is what we call a T-Square—a tense, dynamic configuration that forces us to face challenges head-on.
PLUS the Ruler of this Moon, Daddy Saturn is SQUARING OFF with Jupiter. As if the T-Square wasn’t enough, we’ve also got one of the defining parts of the astrology of the year happening. Saturn, the ruler of this Aquarius Moon, squares off with Jupiter.
Are you still with me? 😅 Take a bio break or grab your fav bev for a deeper dive into this context or go ahead and jump to my TLDR to get the gist of it all.
The Fixed T-Square: A Cosmic Tug-of-War
The T-Square creates a lot of pressure because it’s like being pulled in three different directions at once. The Moon in Aquarius wants to keep things cool, logical, and forward-thinking, while Mercury retrograde in Leo is all about rethinking how we express ourselves and revisiting past conversations or ideas. But then Uranus in Taurus shows up as the wildcard, ready to shake things up with the absoluted unexpected just for funsies.
Fixed signs (Aquarius, Leo, Taurus) are notorious for their stubbornness, and with all this fixed energy, we might find ourselves caught in a battle of wills, feeling like we’re being pulled in different directions. But here’s the thing: while this energy can be challenging, it’s also incredibly powerful for breaking through old patterns and creating lasting change.
Jupiter-Saturn Square
This square is a HUGE DEAL and is actually part of a much larger cosmic narrative, my darlings. Jupiter and Saturn are clashing in mutable signs—Jupiter in Gemini and Saturn in Pisces—continuing a story that began in 2016 when they squared off in Virgo and Sagittarius. Mutable signs are all about adaptability and transformation. This series of squares is about shedding outdated beliefs and systems to make way for new perspectives that better serve our needs and higher purpose. Don’t be surprised if lessons/vibes/themes from 2016ish begin to resurface as we kick off this 10-month dance of Jupiter and Saturn.
As I’ve mentioned before, Jupiter is the cosmic Hype Daddy and he is all about:
expansion + growth
spirituality, religion, seeking of any type
higher learning
abundance + fortune and seeking
Saturn is the Daddy of all Daddies and he is all about:
boundaries
restriction
discernment
success
maturation
karma
The tension between Jupiter and Saturn creates friction that drives monumental change, both personally and collectively. This square challenges us to find the sweet spot between expansion (Jupiter) and contraction (Saturn), pushing us to dream big while keeping our feet on the ground. We're being called to take responsibility for our choices and confront any shortcuts, insecurities or avoidant tendencies. This transit can expose where we've been cutting corners or letting fear hold us back.
By addressing our challenges head-on, we create a solid foundation for sustainable expansion. It's like building muscle: the resistance (Saturn) is necessary for growth (Jupiter). Expect this square to highlight areas in your life where you need to balance optimism with practicality, faith with discipline, and ambition with patience. It's not always comfortable, but honey, that's where the magic happens!
What to expect over the next 10 months:
Questioning Your Beliefs: You might find yourself reassessing what you truly believe in and whether your current belief system still fits.
Reassessing Community + Friendships: Some connections might come under scrutiny as you explore new perspectives and connections that align more with your evolving self.
Exploring New Perspectives: Be open to new learnings and experiences that could shift your worldview.
Redefining Your Spiritual Path: This transit could catalyze a spiritual overhaul, prompting you to explore new paths or deepen your current practices.
With peak moments on August 19, 2024, December 24, 2024, and June 15, 2025, we’re in for a transformative 3-part mini-series. Stay grounded in your values, embrace the challenges, and keep breathing. We’re in this together, and remember: you’ve got this!
TLDR: Sparking Revolution
This Aquarius Super Blue Full Moon is serving up a cocktail of disruption, innovation, revolution and transformation. We've got:
A Super Moon (bigger, brighter, more in-your-face)
A Blue Moon (third Full Moon in a four-Full-Moon season)
A Fixed T-Square (Moon, Mercury Rx, Uranus) creating tension and breakthrough potential
Jupiter square Saturn (major dreams vs. reality checks, part 1 of 3 that is playing out over the next 10ish months)
What does it all mean? Expect the unexpected, question everything (including yourself or rather you news sources), and be ready for some major shifts both personally and collectively. For yourself you may be embarking on a shift in your beliefs, relationships, and worldview. In the world we may witness unexpected or surprising change (especially in the political arena here in the U.S.). This Full Moon is all about balancing innovation with practicality, freedom with responsibility, and personal growth with collective evolution.
IDK about you, but i’m already feeling beat (I mean this last week of astrology was no joke already, and now we kick our new week off with this chaos). I know I usually write rituals and spreads for y’all, and besides being too tired and overwhelmed after trying to break this frenetic energy down for you, I also just don’t think it’s the time. Take this Moon to rest, reflect, journal, meditate. Listen in and see what you need to illuminate at this time. If you need guidance ask the Tarot “What needs illumination at this time?” But don’t push too hard. Big astrology like this often offers you what you need. As we once again find ourselves in “unprecedented times” seek some unprecedented care for yourself. And maybe for you this means taking some stuff off your plate rather than adding (even something positive) to it. Big hugs for now.
