Welcome to Virgo Season! Tis season of the maiden of the mind as well as the harvest. We have entered a transitionary time, as we savor the last moments of summer before welcoming autumn when Libra season arrives on September 22nd. This liminal time know in the fashion world as “pre-fall” brings pumpkin spice and back-to-school to mind, but let us not forget it is still summer!!! (Don’t @ me all you Fall Lovers, you can still drink your pumpkin spice cold brew as you soak up the last bits of summer at your local swimming hole 😜) The mutable seasons (Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces + Gemini) are powerful portals of liminality, which I find expressly shown in the time of year they fall - quite literally in-between seasons. If you can’t decide if it’s still daisy duke weather or time to buy a new sweater, you are not alone. IMHO the mutable seasons are all about taking inventory before we head into the next season of the year. Enjoy all that this threshold season offers, which includes being suspended in the in-betwixtness found within yourself and the outside world. No need to rush into autumn, we have all season to be where we are and allow ourselves to reflect on the bounty of summer, perhaps quite literally harvesting it, and relishing in the juicy last tidbits before we welcome shorter days. Embrace the liminality, my loves.
The Virgo archetype may be one of my favorites to talk about. I find that it’s often presented in such a flat way to us. We always hear how Virgo’s are organized, have RBF, love to plan and edit and overthink everything. We never hear how damn psychic and spooky they are or how they have an innate ability to see patterns and connections that others miss, making them natural problem-solvers and healers. Virgo is a mutable earth sign ruled by the planet Mercury, the only God who could move between the above-world and under-world unscathed. Uhm, hello, this is major indications for divination, speaking to the dead and generally receiving all sorts of signs, signals and messages from other realms. Mercury also rules communication and thinking, hence the correlation to writing, reading, planning, heading back to school, oh and overthinkinggggg. This year's Virgo Season beginning with Mercury Retrograde is particularly significant. It's urging us to slow down, think twice, and reflect back on the summer before marching toward our autumnal goals, ambitions and plans.
Virgo is named such as it represents the archetype of the Virgin. In Greek translations, the word virgin historically meant “one unto herself.” Before the 1300’s this work had nothing to do with sexuality and everything to do with sovereignty. This is a time to reclaim the word virgin and it’s original archetypal meaning - freedom, self-sufficiency, and wholeness. To be "one unto themself" is to be unowned and self-governed. This sovereignty is at the heart of Virgo season. It's an invitation to stand firmly in your own power, to define yourself for yourself, and to cultivate a deep sense of self-reliance. During this season, we're called to examine where we might be giving our power away or where we're looking outside ourselves for completion or validation. Virgo energy encourages us to reclaim that power. This is a perfect time to “call your power back” - and I will be sharing a simple ritual for doing so within this guide.
